My Story

My childhood was busy. I liked it that way. I danced 5-6 days a week, I learnt three instruments, I got into soccer, competitive road cycling, surfing, snowboarding and wakeboarding and later started half marathon and marathon running.

I had an inability to slow down. I was driven, hard working, competitive, a try hard. All these traits I once thought were making me a resilient person and allowed me to achieve some things I was really proud of. Little did I know that I was working against my brain and autonomic nervous system not with it. I was pushing against resistance. The hand brake was always on and I was never actually reaching my true potential.

In 2012 I sustained a concussion that was different from the others. I couldn’t recover. Symptoms got worse over time, not better. I couldn’t exercise, I found it hard to socialise, drive or even sit in a café. My world got very small and I felt very lonely. Over time anxiety, depression and panic attacks developed. I tried hard to get well. Sought excellent medical treatment, did what I was told, tried medications and over time ventured into alternative treatments. It was fruitless. I felt stuck and unable to recover.

Two years later I had had enough and knew the only way to get out of this hole was to understand my brain better. I attended a course in neuroplasticity (how the brain rewires itself) and I got better very quickly. I’m talking 70% better in a week. This was profound. I was excited. Three weeks later I returned to work. When I returned I knew I wanted to integrate this new knowledge into my musculoskeletal physio practice. I upskilled in more medical based neuroscience and pain science courses and Refocus was born.

Refocus is a blend of physiotherapy, neuroscience, pain science, neuroplasticity and personal experience. It’s an understanding of how the brain and autonomic nervous system functions and how we can rewire ourselves, heal and return to being adaptive, evolving effortlessly to our environments and thriving even under “high pressure” situations.

It’s a weapon to understand our brain and autonomic nervous system. It allows us to end suffering, return to wellbeing and become eager towards life again and the exciting opportunities that await us.

I love sharing this information. Please get in touch if you have any questions about how I can help.
